Broadcasting to large local audiences

Posted by:

We were asked to live broadcast the memorial services for two sheriff’s deputies on two consecutive days last week. The largest church in the region could not handle the over capacity crowds. After they filled the main chapel with 5000 people, they crowded everyone left into every one of the surrounding rooms on the church campus that they could to allow people to watch the 90 minute services. There was a problem however. None of the adjunct rooms on the ...

The FCC, The Internet, and Regulation

Posted by:

Once again the federal government is trying to find or create some injured party to justify the creation of a new regulatory diktat under the FCC to lay hands on the operation of the Internet. Actually in this case it is probably even worse. The Obama administration may not even care if they find an injured party to justify their desire to regulate something that they do not currently regulate. The Internet since its creation has been largely self regulating. ...

Finally a Video Storage calculator

Posted by:

AJA makes great products for capturing and processing video. We use some of these products and they are bullet proof. But we noticed recently that AJA has now come out with a free app to support video storage calculations. Did we mention that it’s free? We have done these calculations on the backs of napkins in the past and we have made mistakes in our calculations. This little app can be configured for video densities all the way up to ...

Live Video Preproduction Planning

Posted by:

Oh my gosh! What have I forgotten? My company’s live video broadcast is next week and I am not sure that I have everything covered! It could be a disaster if I forget something! What do I do?

We don’t hear this very much when we are involved with a client in preproduction planning for a live video broadcast, but that is because we are involved. As the broadcaster you must be involved in advance, but what questions are important?  It ...

The importance of live video switching

Posted by:

All the high tech video equipment, audio gear and so forth does not guarantee a watchable and entertaining on line live video stream unless you spend the time to understand the order of a live event and incorporate as much of what is going on as is possible. This is done by actively paying attention to what is going on in a room and switching to the action. That is the art in what we do as Internet video broadcasters. ...

Shaunapalooza Music Festival

Posted by:

This past weekend we produced a live switched Internet broadcast of the Shaunapalooza Music Festival from Swabbies on the River in Sacramento California. This festival has been put on by its promoters for the past three years. We have been there every year to broadcast this event. This year we live switched four cameras and included graphics and lower thirds in the live stream. More than a dozen bands played for this two day festival. The weather was great. For ...

What is 4K Video

Posted by:

4K Video recording presents some new challenges and opportunities for cinematography and video in general, but what is 4K Video? 4K Video is also known as Ultra High Definition Television of UHDTV for short. It has been accepted as a standard by the broadcast industry and has broad application in video and cinema work but it is still a ways off from large scale consumer acceptance. UHDTV is defined by display devices or content having a horizontal resolution of 4,000 ...

What is video image stabilization

Posted by:

Video image stabilization is an important feature of contemporary still and video camera lenses. Image stabilization or “IS” for short is accomplished in the lens of the camera. It works by reducing the effective area of exposure of the imaging sensor(s) in the camera by 10-15%. If the camera shakes while recording, the camera uses that 10-15% border area to smooth the image. IS is popular for handheld work. We use IS for tripod mounted shots that require a medium ...

How Much Internet Bandwidth Do I Need for Live Broadcasting

Posted by:

How much Internet bandwidth do I need for live broadcasting? At our company we go around and around on this subject. There is no absolute right answer, other than the more the merrier. So let me give you the tools you need to determine if a venue has “enough” Internet bandwidth for you to send a single live video stream out to a CDN. We will not discuss the CDN to end user network issues in this post.

There are two ...
